Sessions overview
Sessions are single innovation workshops built from an agenda of drills, custom items and dividers that you can play, share and report on.
A session is one innovation workshop. It is the core building block of the Instigator area: you plan the agenda, run it with participants in Play mode, and generate a report afterwards. Sessions can stand alone or belong to a sprint, which in turn can belong to a project.
Why sessions matter
Sessions turn a challenge into a timed, facilitated plan. Each agenda item has a duration, so the app calculates when every exercise starts and when the session ends. Participants get virtual posters to work on, and you can reuse a good session as a template or duplicate.
Key concepts
- Session details: Name (required), Client, Challenge statement, Session format (In Person, Virtual or Hybrid, default Hybrid), Start date, time zone, and the number of Individuals, Duos and Teams.
- Make a session from: when you create a session you choose Scratch, Template or Previous (copy one of your earlier sessions).
- Agenda items: each row of the agenda. It can be a drill from the Drill library, a custom item that you create with Add agenda item, or a divider (Add divider) that splits the agenda into blocks. Drills and custom items have a Duration and an Execution type (for example group, team, duo or individual). You can also add notes and resources to each item.
- Session resources: links that are useful to all participants. You add them when you edit a session, and they appear in Play mode under Session resources.
- Virtual posters: for Virtual and Hybrid sessions, Play mode creates one virtual poster for each group, team, duo or individual, based on each drill's execution type and your participant numbers. Each poster links to a Miro board. Other whiteboard tools (Mural, Witeboard, Excalidraw) are not shown in the app at the moment.
- Archived sessions: archived sessions are hidden from the active list but are not deleted. You can unarchive them at any time.
- Personal vs team: sessions created in My Work are personal. Sessions created while a team is selected belong to that team and are visible to its members.
Where to find sessions
- Pick a workspace in the workspace switcher, the narrow strip on the far left. Click My Work for personal sessions, or a team's initials for that team's sessions.
- In the Instigator sidebar, under My work, click Sessions.
- Use Create session (top right of the list) to start a new one, or the + icon in the top header and then + Create session.
- Click a session name to open it. The ... menu next to the session name and the ... menu on each row of the list hold actions such as Edit, Duplicate, Create template, Share and Archive.
Free licenses can create up to 5 sessions. If you reach the limit, you see "You cannot create more Sessions under your current license. Please Upgrade."
