Small bets overview

What small bets, outcomes, LFIs and LFI implications are, and how they turn assumptions into knowledge on an Innovation Opportunity.

A small bet is a lean experiment that tests one hypothesis. Instead of committing a large budget to an untested idea, you invest a little time or money, see what happens and record what you learned. In SolveNext Lab, small bets live inside each hypothesis on an Innovation Opportunity.

Why it matters

Small bets are how assumptions become knowledge. Each one captures the experiment, what happened and what it means for the opportunity. Over time, this builds a traceable record of learning that you can review in the opportunity's Full report.

Key concepts

  • Small bet: the experiment itself. You describe it in the Describe the small bet field.
  • Small bet outcomes: what happened when you ran the experiment, such as results, numbers or observations.
  • LFI (Learning From Investment): the key insight the experiment gave you. It answers "What did we learn?". You enter it in the Write down your LFI field.
  • LFI implications: what the learning means for your strategy, product or opportunity. It answers "So what?".
  • Generated small bets: an LFI implication often suggests a new experiment. The Generate Small Bet From LFI link adds a new small bet that is linked to the one it came from. The Full report shows these links as "Generated from LFI Implication" and "Generated Small Bet".
  • Resources: files or links attached to a small bet as evidence, such as a survey export or a prototype URL.
  • Result: after reviewing your LFIs, set the hypothesis Result to True or False. The hypothesis then moves from Assumptions to Knowledge.

Where to find it

  1. In the Leader sidebar, click Innovation Opportunities and click the opportunity's name.
  2. Click the Assumptions vs Knowledge heading to expand the tables.
  3. Click a hypothesis's text to open its form. Its small bets appear under Small bets.
  4. Click Add small bet to add a new one. You can also add small bets when you create a hypothesis with New assumption.

All small bet changes are saved when you click Save at the bottom of the hypothesis form.

Access

Creating hypotheses requires a Pro license. Editing a hypothesis and its small bets is available to the opportunity's owner and to members of the opportunity's team.
