Spendings overview

How opportunity budgets and spendings work, where to record them, and how spending totals roll up to portfolios and your workspace.

Every Innovation Opportunity can have a budget and a running record of what you have spent on it. Spendings help you compare what you planned to invest with what you have actually invested, and they feed the totals for portfolios and for your workspace.

Why it matters

Tracking spend next to learning shows whether your investment is paying off. If an opportunity has used most of its budget but still has many untested assumptions, it may be time to rethink your small bets.

Key concepts

  • Budget: the amount allocated to the opportunity. You set it on the opportunity's Edit page. It cannot be more than the budget of the opportunity's portfolio.
  • Spending entry: a single expense with an amount (Spending), a date (Spending date) and an optional Description. You can record one entry per date for each opportunity.
  • Allocated, Spent and Available: the Budget card shows the budget, the total spent so far, the amount left and a progress bar.
  • Spending chart: a line chart in the Budget card showing cumulative spending after each entry, in date order. The chart's scale goes up to the budget, or to total spending if you have spent more than the budget.
  • Spending History: a collapsible list of every entry with its date, amount and description, plus an Edit button for each entry.
  • Roll-up: each opportunity's spent amount is the total of its entries. Portfolio spending is the total of its opportunities, and your personal or team spending is the total of its portfolios.

Where to find it

  1. In the Leader sidebar, click Innovation Opportunities and click the opportunity's name.
  2. Scroll to the Budget card to see the totals and chart, or click Add spendings to record an expense.
  3. Below it, click Spending History to expand the list of entries.

If the opportunity is in the Unassigned portfolio, the Budget card is replaced by the message "No portfolio assigned; edit this innovation opportunity to select a portfolio and view its budgets and metrics." Move it to another portfolio first.
